AEU
There is a sub branch at each campus. Issues related to the new Agreement, conditions of work,
class sizes, pay, and other related topics are all discussed at sub-branch meetings throughout the
year.. Membership forms are available from either the Sub-branch secretary or President.

ALARMS
College security alarms are switched on after 7.00 pm on weekdays and operate during weekends
and school holidays. Teachers wishing to enter school buildings during alarmed periods need to
notify the Business Manager, Irene Blake, to make arrangement for the appropriate alarms to be
deactivated. Failure to deactivate alarms will result in a Police/Security visit to the school, in which
cases the school is liable for a fee in excess of $200.00.
Ensure you lock doors, windows and turn off heaters or fans after you leave at the end of the day.

AWARDS
The College has formal awards ceremonies at the completion of the school year.
A variety of awards are presented to students for achievement, cooperation, leadership etc.
Students may also receive certificates of achievement for end of semester results. Home Group
teachers should keep a record of student extra-curricular participation and achievement, for
recording in student reports – this includes sport, student leadership, debating & public speaking,
academic competitions such as Tournament of Minds etc.

BOOKINGS
The College uses the computerized BOOK IT system, available on the College network, to make
bookings for rooms, including Library, Computer Rooms, TLC and Conference Room; AV
equipment etc. See the Librarian for assistance.

CANTEEN
Staff may order lunches from the canteen. A price list is posted on the noticeboard.
Year 12 students only may purchase from canteen during study periods, but students are not
permitted to bring food or drinks to class.
The Canteen Manager should be notified in advance by the organizing teachers, regarding any
excursions or camps which affect student numbers at school.

CAR PARKING
Staff carparks at the front and rear of the school are for staff use only. Students are not permitted
to park on school premises. School car parks are out of bounds to students during recess and
lunchtime. Yard Duty teachers are requested to move any students away if they are playing in car
parks. Please report any students using staff carparks to Senior Year Level Coordinators.

CAREERS
The Grange has a comprehensive careers program from Year 7 onwards, including the use of a
major simulation careers game: The Real Game; Work Experience at Year 10 Careers
Assessment and VCE Counselling, career counselling interviews available by appointment with all
students including twice with all Year 12 students culminating in VTAC choices.Jobs Pathways
regularly visit the school to assist young people moving from school to full-time
employment/apprenticeships/traineeships. Many students participate in VET and New
Apprenticeship programs to facilitate their industry training skills and employability, plus the
opportunity to participate in higher education and TAFE. The school prides itself on ensuring that
all young people who exit the school at the end of their VCE move on to appropriate destinations
based on career needs.

COLLEGE COUNCIL
College Council generally meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Council consists of
elected, coopted and ex officio members. The Council is the governing body responsible for policy
and decision making for the college. Council responsibilities are implemented via a number of subcommittees
which meet on a monthly basis and are open to all members of the College
community. Council Sub-committees: Finance, Student Learning, Transitions and Pathways and
Student Well Being.
Any member of the school community may attend Council meetings as an observer.
Deloraine Campus Staff representatives on Council are elected early each year

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community Service duty involves students in daily tasks which include attendance roll records,
office, library or canteen tasks, yard duty and gardening. Daily, groups of four students from a
class are assigned to take their turn at completing this service.
As a school we are committed to maintaining a clean and litter-free environment. Consequently,
the following arrangements operate on the secondary campus. One Homegroup sends four
students daily to the office to undertake the above listed duties. Once these tasks have been
completed, their diaries are signed and they return to their normal classes. Students attend
Community Service in their normal school uniform.
Year 7 to 9 students have only one week of Community Service and Yard Duty per term. Year 10
students have only one week of yard duty per semester, and do not participate in Community
Service.

COMPUTERS
The technical support team consisting of Technicians can be contacted on extension 151.
Teachers are asked to direct any requests for assistance through the Leading Teacher responsible
for ICT.

CROSS COUNTRY
The annual cross country run occurs in term 2. All students in Years 7 to 10 participate, as well as
VCE students who express a wish to run. See the Sports Coordinator.

CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
Responsibility for the secondary Curriculum is the Deloraine Curriculum Committee and KLA
leaders.
The Curriculum Committee meets regularly to discuss curriculum planning, development and
implementation. Curriculum implementation meetings are attended by KLA leaders or their
representatives, and are open to all staff. Curriculum development meetings are a forum for
generating and exploring curriculum ideas and are open to all staff.

DEBATING
The Grange participates in interschool and intraschool debating. See the Debating Coordinator.

DRUGS ACTION PLAN
The College Drugs Policy, known as the Individual School Drug Education Strategy, or ISDES, is
located in the Policy section of this folder. The ISDES Committee meets regularly to review and
implement the Policy. ISDES Committee reports to the Student & Staff Welfare Sub-committee of
Council.

EDUMAIL
Much official DE&T communication occurs via Edumail, as well as intra-school communication.
Teachers can access their Edumail from their offices, via the college network. Please see the
Technician for technical queries, and the Human Resources Manager (HRM) regarding general
Edumail issues. All school communication from Administration is via email. Teachers are requested to check their Edumail on a regular basis.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE SITUATIONS – LOCK DOWN
An announcement over the PA system will be used to alert staff to any pending emergency. Clear
instructions will be provided to staff and students regarding actions that they are required to take.
In a “lock down” situation, teachers will be asked to keep all their students within the classroom.
No one should leave the room. Students who are on their way to their classroom should go quickly
to their room so that the yard is cleared immediately.

EMERGENCY PLAN - EVACUATION
The School Operations Principal coordinates the Emergency Evacuation Plan. Fire Drills are held
on a regular basis. An alarm will signal the commencement of an evacuation. Teachers are
required to escort their class to the oval, bringing their class roll with them. Leave the classroom
unlocked and ensure that all your students accompany you.
Upon arrival at the oval, line up your class in the designated area for your year level and report to
the marshall. You will be required to mark your class roll and return roll promptly to chief marshall.
Supervise your students until further instructed.
A Block Marshall will be nominated to check that each classroom block has been fully evacuated.

END OF YEAR PROGRAM
The relevant Year Level Leader will inform you of the end of year program.

ESL
The College caters for students who speak English as a Second Language. See the ESL
Coordinator for further information

EXITS
Students leaving The Grange are required to fill in an exit form. Students can only collect an Exit
Form from the appropriate Assistant Principal. Subject/Year Level Coordinators should sign the
exit form, as well as Librarian (re overdue books) and the General Office.
Final signature should be the appropriate Assistant Principal.
If you suspect a student has exited the school, please follow up with relevant Year Level
Coordinator.

GATES AND FENCES
College fences and gates provide additional security to the grounds. During the school day,
students are to remain inside the fences. The area behind the Gym, and the area along the front
of the Admin Block, continuing down past the Library, is out of bounds to students. During the
school day the gates will be locked, except for the gates adjacent to the Administration Block.
During the school day, students who enter or leave the school grounds must do so through the
front office. Students may only leave the grounds with permission from their Year Level Leader.

GRADUATE TEACHERS
The Grange offers ongoing support to graduate teachers, beginning with a College induction and
continuing with regular support meetings throughout the first year. New teachers will be allocated
with a Grange Mentor to assist with the familiarisation process. Graduate teachers will also
participate in preparation and professional development to support their accreditation procedures
through the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Please see the Induction/VIT Coordinator regarding
queries.

INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
The College encourages the development of integrated curriculum, where appropriate, in Middle
Years.

INTEGRATION
Students diagnosed with special needs may require the assistance of an Integration Aide. See the
Assistant Principal for Student Welfare.

LEAVE
For queries regarding leave please contact Heather Gleeson (Admin Office).

LIBRARY
Please contact the school Librarians and the Library Technician regarding library related queries
such as book and videos etc. Their expert assistance is also available for internet research.
The College currently has access to The Electric Library for periodicals and newspapers, plus we
have The Age online.

LITERACY
Literacy and Numeracy are College Charter Priorities. Middle School Students are tested to
diagnose literacy difficulties, and if necessary, special literacy assistance is provided.

MAIL
Incoming mail is directed to teachers via pigeon holes.
Outgoing mail is collected in the mail tray in the photocopying room in the main staffroom.
Outgoing mail should be left in unsealed envelopes, for Office staff to register and process.

LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE
The Leadership Committee consists of Principal Class and Leading Teachers. The committee
meets regularly to discuss management issues and make recommendations which inform the
principal’s decisions. Elected teacher members represent staff views on Management. Forums
such as staff, team and union meetings, or individual approaches, are other ways to have input into
the decision making process.

MEDICINES
Students who need to take any medication whilst at school should bring a note from a
parent/guardian and leave the medication at the General Office. Office staff will supervise
distribution of medication.

MIPS
MIPS is coordinated by a Leading Teacher. All students in years 10 – 12 have MIPs plans and they
are updated regularly. See the MIPs Leading Teacher for more details.

MONEY
Students should make their payments at the Administration Block. Payments can only be made
during recess and lunchtime. Students should not approach the Office during class time.

NEWSLETTER
The College regularly publishes a newsletter for distribution to the school community. This is a
vital means of communicating with parents etc. Contributions should be forwarded to Gerald
Kearney, preferably via email.

NEWSPAPERS
Teachers who take out a special teacher newspaper subscription to either The Age or The Herald
Sun, will have their newspaper delivered to the college each school day for collection from the
staffroom tables.

NOTEBOOKS

OHS
For any OHS issues, please contact the OHS Coordinator or the Principal of School Operations.

ORDERS
Purchases of equipment and materials etc. should be made via the official order books, available
from the Finance Office. Teachers will need to see the Program coordinator before any orders are
written.

OVAL
Students are to obey the rules concerning correct use of the oval at recess/lunch times:
• Joining the two posts (nearest to the basketball courts) with an imaginary line creates a
boundary line on the oval. Students may use the area up to this line as a passive area to sit
and meet with others.
• Beyond this boundary line, the oval is an area for active sports only.
• Students may sit on the goal post side of the mound along Deloraine Drive. The fence side
of this mound is out of bounds.
• All fence lines are out of bounds.
• Yard duty teachers will be directing students to these agreed areas. All students are to
cooperate if they are requested to move. All the rules at The Grange have been established
to ensure the safety of everyone.
Students should not have food or drinks on the oval.

PHOTOGRAPHS
Annual staff and student photographs are taken early in the school year. The Assistant Principals
have a full set of student photographs. See them if you need help identifying students you may
encounter on yard duty, in extras, etc.

PIGEON HOLES
Pigeon holes are the main medium for distribution of paperwork: mail, newsletters, memos and
extras. Please check your pigeon hole for extras every morning .Staff pigeon holes are located in
the main staffroom. The office staff will allocate pigeon holes for new staff members. Please clear
your pigeon hole regularly.

PRIMARY CAMPUS
The Grange is a Prep to 12 College, ie, one school, with a primary and secondary campus. The
Primary Campus is located in Callistemon Drive, approximately 500 metres away from the
secondary campus. There is a P - 4 Principal and a 5 - 6 Principal. The Primary General Office
can be contacted on extension 148. The Grange Strategic Plan and major policies are P – 12
inclusive. P – 12 staff meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each term.

PRIVACY
New regulations relating to privacy were implemented in recent years. Full details are available
from the General Office.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
All staff are encouraged to attend professional development activities. Priority will be given to
professional development which meets the goals and priorities of the College Strategic Plan. Staff
are to use their Performance and Development Plans to identify professional development most
useful to them. Professional Development is held at the college on Thursdays after school. A
timetable will be given to each teacher at the start of each term outlining the PD.

PUBLIC SPEAKING & DEBATING
Students who are interested in Public Speaking and Debating will have the chance to compete in
competitions with other schools in the area, as well as state-wide contests. Students interested
should contact the Leading Teacher.

RECYCLING
The main staffroom has a recycling bin for cans, as well as one for paper and newspapers. All
teacher offices should have a box marked “Recycling” for non-newsprint paper.

SCHOOL GLOBAL BUDGET
Funding for College programs and activities is distributed under the School Global Budget.
Programs must operate within the allowance of their budget. Each year, program leaders such as
Discipline Leaders, etc submit a budget to the Budget Committee which will determine the funding
available to each program in the forthcoming year. See the Finance Officer regarding budget
queries.

SKATEBOARDS
Students are discouraged from bringing skateboards to school. Skateboards and bikes must not
be ridden in school grounds. Students who bring skateboards to school should leave them in
their year level office and collect them at the end of the day.

SPECIAL PAYMENTS
A number of Special Payments positions are available every three years (rotation of three years).
Please see your Year Level Leader for the relevant information.

STATIONERY
Teachers and KLAs purchase their requirements form their Program Budget. For any requests,
please refer to relevant Year Level Coordinator or Discipline Leader. Please do not ask office staff
for stationery.

STUDENT ENROLMENTS AND EXITS
All student enrolments and exits are to be initiated by the Middle Year, Senior Year or Later Years
School Principals. Enrolment interviews will precede new students coming into the College. If
teachers are informed of possible student exits, please report this to the appropriate Principal who
will check this information before handing out exit forms. Exiting students will ask their teachers to
sign these forms and then parent permission/ signature is to be added. Forms are to be returned
to Principals for their final approval, signature and liaison with office staff.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP
At The Grange we encourage, promote and value student leadership. Whether a student has an
interest in sport, music, performing or visual arts, the college provides intensive student leadership
opportunities. The Grange has established public speaking and debating programs and
participates in various inter-school competitions. The college hosts a variety of leadership
programs including various leadership camps.
Student advocacy is also of great importance at The Grange. The Student Representative
Committee (SRC) meets regularly and provides a forum for students to discuss college issues,
reflect student interests and develop their negotiation, decision-making and leadership skills. The
SRC has established a fundraising foundation which supports various community programs and
initiatives.

TEA & COFFEE
Bring your own tea/coffee, milk, mug etc. Please help keep our fridges, microwaves and staffroom
clean.

TIMETABLE
Please see the School Operations Principal regarding timetabling requests.

TRANSITION
A formal Transition Program runs annually at The Grange. This task is ongoing and the success of
the program relies on the support and flexibility of staff within the college. Tasks that involved in the
Transition Program include:
• Parent Information Evening participation
• Schools Expo participation
• College tours
• Discovery Days for Year 5 students
• Orientation Day for new students

VCE/VET FREE PERIODS
Year 12 students during study periods must attend either the Study Centre or the Library. They
should not be in the yard.

VCE – YEAR 12 STUDY CENTRE
The Year 12 Study Centre is located behind the C Block. This area is for quiet study and
computers have been provided for student use. There is also a recreation space.

VET
The college offers a very strong VET program (Vocational Education and Training). Please see
the VET Coordinator.

VIDEOS
The Library has an extensive collection of videos. Teachers can arrange to have programs
recorded, by prior arrangement with the Library Technician.
VCR and monitors can be booked for class use via the Library Video booking computer system.
Video cameras and other equipment can also be borrowed by teachers. Please enquire in
advance at the Library.

VISITORS TO SCHOOL
Student visitors between 9am and 3pm are discouraged. Visitors will need to demonstrate a need
(rather than a desire) to visit a student during school hours.
