LITERACY-

At the Grange our Literacy curriculum for reading, writing and speaking and listening is taught in accordance with the WMR Blueprint and provides a learning environment that supports literacy learning.  Literacy teaching involves whole class instruction where the explicit focus is taught through modelled and shared reading and writing.  This structured teaching provides for the most effective learning time.

A daily two hour literacy session is conducted. Teachers work with small groups in reading, writing, speaking and listening.  This provides focused teaching for individuals.  While teachers are working with these groups, children are working on purposeful, independent activities.

CLASSROOM LIBRARIES-

At The Grange each classroom has set up their own ‘Classroom Library’ as part of our Independent Reading Program.

These areas are comfortable, creative and well designed with a variety of library books that are ‘just right’. Children have the opportunity to choose and read favourite books that are interesting and then engage in meaningful conversations with their peers and classroom teacher.

Follow up activities which include book responses reflect their appreciation and enjoyment of the book. Independent reading provides indispensable practice that ALL children require to become ‘smart thinking’ and ‘thoughtful’ readers

NUMERACY-

In Prep, consideration is given to student’s “stages of mathematical growth”.

The students are supported in their learning of mathematical ideas through the use of appropriate materials and activities either through a whole class or small group focus.

The learning environment created will consider the learning context such as real-life experiences, games, literature based tasks and open ended tasks depending on what is most suitable for the mathematical focus and needs of the students.

Students are encouraged to apply their skills and understandings to make sense of mathematical ideas which enables them to create a generalisation and transfer this to new mathematical ideas.

Students participate in Numeracy for a minimum of 5 hours per week.
